MOCK EXAM PAPER 1 SECTION B ( Film Marketing)

a) What is meant by an independent film ? [3]

An independent film is made by people who do not work for big companies and usually with smaller budgets and lesser known stars these independent film producers usually don’t have as many fancy films and they also have to advertise it themselves across social media or posters. They may get funding help from people within the community if people are interested. Also independent films may not even be released in cinemas all the time and people may have to resort to free viewers to grow a reputation.

b) briefly explain what vertical integration is. [2]

When a company owns many smaller companies in the same type of business (usually) for example Disney owns all the star wars franchise but also owns the camera company and lighting company needed to film the movies so production is much much cheaper and not a problem for them at all.

c) Explain how independent films use marketing and other methods to target and maximise their potential audience . Refer to  I, Daniel Blake  to support your   points. [10]

Depending on the genre of film and the target audience marketing would need to vary, for example if you were making a horror film and wanted a large audience promoting it on social media on different platforms ahead of time and documenting progress would peak viewers interests and get them excited for the release. Also, depending on budgets you could pay to have the film promoted by a bigger social media account that focuses around horror to gain some sort of starting customer base and possibly giving more investors.

Daniel Blake also shows marketing of age as it is mostly just older adult actors and it is a more serious movie that doesn’t include superheroes or toys for younger people but it is definitely not restricted just to the older audience.

d) Explain how economic contexts and financial considerations  shape mainstream films. Refer to Black Panther  to support your points. [10 ]

Black panther was produced by marvel who are owned by Disney so funding for the film was only a low cost of 200million the more money and more popular actors a movie has will probably immediately attract many more people than a film with low budgets as a bigger more known company is expected to have a great film meaning most people would see it without being worried about wasting time or money. Getting into the mainstream film business is a difficult task as most of it is already owned by the big companies who will all have better funding that anything a ameatur film maker can fund

Stick's blog- dizzee rascal dream

Dizzee Rascal Dream Dizzee rascal is a grime artist who created a pop-hiphop-grime music video talking about his success and a message to inspire the younger generations. The surface of the video is a light playful setting created by the kids building blocks and the fact that dizzee comes out of a jack in a box. There is a story created of a classic lower-class urban area all on top of this woman piano as dizzee raps his lyrics. Puppets are introduced which are stealing a tv and then fighting the police this compared to a usual grime video doesn't not present itself to be as threatening and seems almost childish because of the light representation this could both be dizzee poking fun at grime culture and bringing awareness to the upper class.  As we look deeper into the video we realise that all the puppets have strings attached to them in this old white woman's home who is presented as a normal human size. the stri...

Vance Joy 'Riptide' and Taylor swift's 'The Man'

Unseen-Taylor Swift-The Man The representation of the main character seems like a stereotypical dream of most men to be someone who people are jealous of, someone who seems free to do whatever they wish at whatever time. This seems like a upper class male. It's proven when the character does not have empathy for the other subway passengers because he thinks he is better than them i.e. ashing his cigar  into the old woman's bag looking impatiently at his watch suggesting he is used to faster travel.  However, there is also the stereotype of a woman wanting to marry a rich guy just for the money clearly shown in this shot when the girl doesn't kiss The Old Man and shows off her big diamond with a fake smile. Both these stereotypes seem like a representation of what women see men as (assholes) and what men see women as (something to own), Or this is used to make fun of how society represents capitalism between people of different classes.  In comparison to riptide by Vance J...

Water aid advert - Rain for good - sticks' blog

water aid ad- rain for good   The ad starts off with a stereotypical English forecast of cold colours and rain. The setting is a middle class household in a suburban area represented by the digital radio, the green of the back garden and the small plant. The camera is set to watch out the window as if the audience was there avoiding the rain indoors and dis-regarding water as worthless using it to water plants. this scene only lasts for about 5 seconds before is switches to a binary opposite in rural Africa fading the sound of the rain to the sound of insects and dead plants.  Right after we are introduced to the main character. The girl Is not directly presented as a victim like other ads since she is fully clothed in bright pastel colours and looks generally healthy. There is warm lighting but in a dry environment with few trees and workers trying to still grow crops showing hope. The girl walks past other people on their way back from getting some water this journey is don...
