Unseen-Taylor Swift-The Man
The representation of the main character seems like a stereotypical dream of most men to be someone who people are jealous of, someone who seems free to do whatever they wish at whatever time. This seems like a upper class male. It's proven when the character does not have empathy for the other subway passengers because he thinks he is better than them i.e. ashing his cigar into the old woman's bag looking impatiently at his watch suggesting he is used to faster travel.
However, there is also the stereotype of a woman wanting to marry a rich guy just for the money clearly shown in this shot when the girl doesn't kiss The Old Man and shows off her big diamond with a fake smile. Both these stereotypes seem like a representation of what women see men as (assholes) and what men see women as (something to own), Or this is used to make fun of how society represents capitalism between people of different classes.
In comparison to riptide by Vance Joy, there isn't any indirection of violence towards women however the video does clearly seem to present women as 'lesser' than The Man.
At the end of the video we get a whole view of how the video was shot I believe this is done because it makes us realise that 'The Man' was a act and a fake idea or The Man that was made for us to believe that he runs his own world has just collapsed as he is taking instructions from a woman and its all made by her in which he has turned into the puppet. This conflicts the idea of the video before that woman are less 'powerful' than men playing with societies sexist beliefs.
The setting and design of this scene seems to be a indirection at how rich men are celebrated for nothing?. Or this is trying to once again reinforce how he's such a 'superior' being that everyone wants acknowledgement from him like even a high five will excite them
Money is a big part of both videos as in Riptide "all my friends are turning green" means that money is making them turn green with envy and clearly in 'The Man' we are looking at a upper class bully this shows how no matter how much people say money isn't important it is every persons guilty pleasure no matter the gender or class everyone wants more.
